Exploring Tryon Mountain

Met up with 3 of my 4 favorite Parclay's this morning to do some scouting around Tryon Mountain in hopes of discovering some untapped singletrack.  We started at the little parking area on Lawrence Road and headed up the main trail towards the quarry.  We may or may not have flagged a few trees to mark the way to hopefully retrace our steps on the way back.  I was glad to be along on the scouting mission, but if I could have one superpower (after invisibility), I would pick having a legendary sense of direction.  That's right, legendary.  I think the dogs were more helpful in finding the trail than I was, but I did spy one of the key pink flags later on that led us to one of the best parts (in my humble opinion) of the recon.  We found a great straight up hill climb that went along a high ridge and then back into the woods, the route there was dark and mossy and flanked by some huge trees.  Ian seemed to know where we were going or what we were close to much of the time.  We cruised out and around all the tracks we could find to see where things met up and eventually made our way back to the "switchback-y" part to see if we could find our way back through and back down the mountain to Lawrence Rd.  Only a few small wrong turns on some O-Trail-like portions and we were back to the main trail.  Lots of fun.  Hopefully I'll be able to recreate some of the path on Saturday when I head back for a long run with Scout and Gnarls.
p.s. Ended up with 5.6 on my garmin, but 6.1 when I uploaded it and it corrected itself.
